Bridge closure raises route concerns

An accident that has closed Ardlethen Bridge between Tarves and Ellon has raised concerns that lorries from the quarry operations will divert to inappropriate roads.

Local Councillor Paul Johnston has raised the concerns and asked Council Roads officials to monitor the use of local roads carefully.

“The natural thing for a quarry driver to do is take the short routes.  These are along several small single track roads which should NOT be used as they unsuitable for this kind of traffic.” said Paul.  “Residents will be concerned that trucks will damage the Esselmont Road, Ythsie Road and Auchedly Road.  They are all narrow and are not built  to withstand 20 tonne loads, with narrow bridges and soft verges.”

Roads officials estimate the Ardlethen bridge will be closed for some time with serious problems following it being struck by a vehicle.  Diversions are being put in place and Paul is hoping, discussions with the quarry operators will help avoid the short cutting by quarry sand and gravel lorries.
