Statement on Co-op Development At Oldmeldrum

Aberdeenshire Council have been asked to determine if an edge of town site at Oldmeldrum on the Colpy Road, currently allocated for industrial and employment uses should be allowed for a new small convenience supermarket being developed by local firm Andrew Cowie Construction limited on behalf of the Co-operative group.

However, one of Oldmeldrum’s Aberdeenshire Councillors, Paul Johnston, is an active Co-op member assisting the Co-op in Fairtrade activities and attending local Co-op forums.

“Because of my active support for the Co-operative, it would be improper for me to take a decision as a Councillor in their favour and so I cannot take part in this particular decision” said Paul.

There are 10 of the Councillors in the Formartine area who would determine the application in such circumstances.  It is not uncommon for members to register interests where they know the applicant or are involved with an organisation.

“In the recent past I have been involved in trying to get another supermarket group, Sainsbury’s, to evaluate Oldmeldrum as a site for a small supermarket.  They had indicated an interest in a site within the centre of Oldmeldrum, however indicated that they were committed to several other locations and would unfortunately not progress further at Oldmeldrum in the near future.  The Co-op were not considering expansion at that time.” added Paul.
